5 Ways Essential Oils Can Support Your Health

Essential oils have many uses but aromatherapy is certainly at the top of the list. The organic compounds found in essential oils have therapeutic powers with the ability to improve your overall health and well-being. For this reason, many people are using them when searching for a holistic approach to health care and maintenance.

Pure, high-quality essential oils are all natural. They don’t normally have the bad side effects associated with prescription medications and other drugs. However, allergic reactions are possible so know your oils and follow all safety guidelines to help ensure your experience is a good one. If you’re not sure if aromatherapy is right for you, here are five ways essential oils can support your health that may help you decide.

Essential oils have many uses but aromatherapy is certainly at the top of the list. Learn 5 ways essential oils can support your health. #essentialoils #aromatherapy

Fall Asleep Faster and Rest More Peacefully with Essential Oils

Millions of people across the globe suffer from some form of insomnia that keeps them from getting the rest they need to stay healthy. This sleep disorder affects people in various ways. Some have trouble falling asleep while others fall asleep fast only to wake up all through the night. People with extreme insomnia may go days without sleeping.

If you or someone you know has insomnia, aromatherapy may help you get the rest you so desperately need. The most popular oil used for insomnia is Lavender. It has calming and relaxing qualities that create the perfect environment for falling asleep and the sedative properties will help you rest more peacefully throughout the night. Other oils that promote peace, relaxation and calmness include Roman Chamomile, Patchouli, Vetiver, Marjoram and Cedarwood.

Support Respiratory Function and Reduce the Spread of Viruses and Germs

The respiratory system brings oxygen into the body and expels carbon dioxide. When the system is working properly, you can breathe easily and your body functions better as a whole. However, when you suffer from allergies, have a cold or the flu or suffer from any other respiratory condition, it hinders your breathing and disrupts the natural way the system functions.

Certain essential oils have the potential to help support respiratory function by promoting a feeling of clear airways and free breathing. Myrtle, Peppermint, Rosemary, Fir Needle, Eucalyptus, and Pine are oils one might choose to promote good respiratory health. Oils such as Tea Tree and Oregano help purify the air to reduce the spread of germs and allergens that cause or contribute to breathing problems, which in turn helps to support healthy respiratory function.

If you are suffering from seasonal allergies, a blend of equal parts Lemon, Lavender, and Peppermint can be very helpful.

Support other Body Functions

In addition to the respiratory system, the body has many other systems that all work together as a whole. These include the circulatory system, immune system, nervous system and digestive system.

Certain essential oils have the potentials to help support these systems to enhance your overall health. For example, oils such as Peppermint, Dill, Ginger, Lemon, Basil, and Oregano help support the digestive system by easing nausea, indigestion, gas, diarrhea, and constipation. Cardamom and Clove help support a healthy cardiovascular system, and essential oils such as Lemon, Geranium, Melaleuca, and Tangerine help boost the immune system so your body can fight off infections naturally. Frankincense, Fennel, and Roman Chamomile may also support healthy immune function.

Support Your Mental and Emotional Health

Your mental and emotional health play a major role in your physical health. If you’re stressed, angry or feeling a bit depressed, diffusing essential oils can make a difference. While you can’t eliminate stress completely and everyone feels a little down sometimes, many agree that these oils can help to eliminate stress and tension while promoting good feelings.

Some oils are grounding and others improve your mood and overall outlook on life. Clary Sage, Sandalwood, Ylang Ylang, Frankincense and Lavender are a few of the essential oils that can help support your mental and emotional health naturally.

Pain Management

Some essential oils are soothing and have the ability to help ease a wide variety of pain that includes sore, achy muscles, headaches, cramps, joint and back pain. Rosemary, Lavender, Helichrysum, Sandalwood and Marjoram are all great oils to use for pain management. Clove is great toothaches and oils like Tea Tree can help clean and disinfect minor abrasions to relieve pain and promote healing.

These are just five of the main ways essential oils support your health to give you an idea of just how versatile these oils really are.

Precautions

Never use essential oils undiluted, in the eyes or mucus membranes. Do not ingest unless working with a qualified practitioner. Keep essential oils away from children. If applying an essential oil to your skin always perform a small patch test to an insensitive part of the body (after you have properly diluted the oil in an appropriate carrier oil).

Contact Lens Case Lavender-Mint Lip Balm Recipe

I love using essential oils in ways that replace more harmful versions of cosmetics and beauty aids. Perhaps you do as well? Most every girl loves a sweet-smelling lotion or body spray, right? (how many of those have you given from a store at the mall that doesn’t use natural ingredients?)

Most everyone loves homemade gifts.  For some reason, I’ve gotten out of the creative gift-giving mood over the past few years, but the desire is returning since I fell in love with essential oils, and have learned so many ways to use them.

When you can make your homemade gifts and cosmetics really special by finding a super cute way to present them, that’s even better. A couple of months ago, I saw this great idea of repurposing colorful contact lens cases. I think they make perfect lip balm cases! Even if you don’t wear contact lenses, you can purchase the cases at most any pharmacy, Wal-mart or online at Amazon.

There are many combinations of essential oils that work well for lip balm, but one of my favorites happens to be lavender and peppermint. Spend some time experimenting with other essential oils if you must, but I think you’ll love this combination.

Contact Lens Case Lavender-Mint Lip Balm - The recipe is so simple to make, you’ll be making it all the time for yourself and all your friends. You could even put a different flavor on each side. #essentialoils #DIY #lipbalm

Contact Lens Case Lavender-Mint Lip Balm Recipe

Ingredients

3 tablespoons organic coconut oil
1 1/2 tablespoons beeswax pellets
1 tablespoon shea, mango, or cocoa butter
1/2 tablespoon castor oil or Vitamin E (optional for a glossier lip balm)
6 drops  lavender essential oil
4 drops  peppermint essential oil

(my favorite essential oils suppliers include Plant Therapy and Rocky Mountain Oils)

Supplies

5 Contact Lens Cases
Tablespoons/teaspoons
Glass measuring jar (Pyrex)

Directions

1. Measure your coconut oil, butter, and beeswax pellets and place them in a clean Pyrex measuring cup.
2. Place Pyrex into a pot of boiling water. Stir as needed. Remove oils from water pot as soon as melted.
3. Add essential oils and castor oil or Vitamin E (if used) and stir to combine.
4. Carefully pour your melted lip balm into your contact lens cases and let set at room temperature for about 30 minutes (carefully transfer to the refrigerator for a quicker set time).

Makes enough to fill 5 contact lens cases on both sides.

Make a few. Give some away. Keep one in your purse, at your bedside, in the bathroom, in the kitchen . . . anywhere you spend a lot of time. The recipe is so simple to make, you’ll be making it all the time for yourself and all your friends. You could even put a different flavor on each side. If you have tween or teen daughters, they will love making these for their friends, too!

30 Ways to Pray for Your Husband

Every day, it is important that as wives we take time out of our day to pray for our husbands. Yes, our days can be hectic, but there is something so powerful about taking time to pray for the one we are married to. Taking the time to pray for your husband helps to keep your vows of marriage and love kindled, during both the times of struggles and the times of joy. The Bible teaches us that we are to pray without ceasing, and having alone time to pray for your husband is a necessary part of that command and can bring you so much more joy than what you are currently experiencing in your prayer life.

If you are a wife who struggles in your relationship with your husband, let me speak to you in particular right now. I have been where you are, and I understand that it can be difficult to pray continuously for a spouse with whom you are angry, has caused you pain, or who has made life harder for you than it needs to be. Please know that these are the husbands that need our continual prayer support most. It won’t be easy at first, and you may struggle with how or what to pray in the beginning. But keep at it. Find just one thing a day to pray about and soon you may find your heart softening toward him as you are faithful in praying for your husband.

One of the biggest issues we all face is praying for the same topic over and over, which is absolutely wonderful . . .  at least you are praying for your husband. However, none of us want to find ourselves in a prayer rut. Personally speaking, I want my prayers to be wholehearted and sincere, but I also sometimes need ideas for what to pray for my husband. So, I pulled out a piece of paper and started writing down a few ideas. Once I came up with one, the ideas started flooding me!  I wanted to take the time to share 30 of these ideas that I came up with with you, in case you would love other ideas for what to pray for your husband as well.

  1. Pray for someone to encourage him today.
  2. Pray for oneness — to keep your unity in faith and marriage as God created.
  3. Pray for him to have wisdom throughout the day.
  4. Pray for him to have the confidence to lead others, no matter what the circumstance.
  5. Pray for him to release any insecurity that he may have about himself.
  6. Pray for his job and the role he plays among his work peers.
  7. Pray for a less stressed day, and that it be filled with joy.
  8. Pray for his health, both physically and mentally.
  9. Pray for a strong bond in his friendships.
  10. Pray for him to have patience in all that he does.
  11. Pray for his interaction with your children.
  12. Pray for him to not lose sight of the little things in life.
  13. Pray for him to take time to grow in his own relationship with God through prayer and Bible study.
  14. Pray for his faith and that it stands firm no matter what comes today.
  15. Pray for him to be content with a little or with much in life.
  16. Pray for him to be kind to himself and others.
  17. Pray for him to not be afraid to share the Gospel of Christ.
  18. Pray for him to be a light of faith no matter where he is or what situation arises.
  19. Pray that he recognizes his own personal talents and that he uses them to their fullest.
  20. Pray that he lives each day to its fullest potential and is diligent in all he does.
  21. Pray that he recognizes his daily blessings and the blessing that he is to others.
  22. Pray that he remains humble and grateful in all circumstances.
  23. Pray that he stays confident in who he is, and never feels inadequate in his job role or in his role as husband and father.
  24. Pray that he strives to understand God’s plan for his life and your family.
  25. Pray that he has patience with your children and that they surround them with love.
  26. Pray that he takes the time to rejoice in the day, giving all glory to God.
  27. Pray that he always finds hope in a world that says there is none, and that he reaffirms hope in our Heavenly Father.
  28. Pray that he never goes through a day where he feels unloved or isolated.
  29. Pray that he always knows he can communicate with you about any topic, good or bad.
  30. Pray that he always has a willingness to serve with a Servant’s heart.

I pray that you enjoy these prayer prompts, and that they will give you more ideas of what to pray for your husband.

What are some areas in which you pray for your husband? I would love to add more to my list of prayer prompts.

Everything You Need to Know About the Paleo Diet

There are many different diets to choose from, but very few are as popular as the Paleo Diet. This unique diet is designed to recreate how humans ate thousands of years ago. While the basics of the Paleo Diet are quite simple, many people aren’t exactly sure what they can and cannot eat throughout the day. Here is a closer look at the origins of the Paleo Diet and a few tips that will make this diet easier to adopt.

While the basics of the Paleo Diet are quite simple, many people aren’t exactly sure what they can and cannot eat throughout the day. Here is a closer look at the origins of the Paleo Diet and a few tips that will make this diet easier to adopt. #paleo #paleodiet

The Origins of the Paleo Diet

Over the last few decades, quite a bit of research has been done on the modern diet. This research continues to show us that our diet has a tremendous impact on every aspect of our health. The foods that we eat every day affect our energy levels, immune system, emotional stability, and cognitive abilities. Many of the ingredients that we once believed to be healthy are actually quite damaging to the body. Most experts agree that we aren’t supposed to eat refined sugar, grains, alcohol, and dairy products. The goal of the Paleo Diet is to replace processed ingredients with fresh produce, healthy fats, lean meats, nuts, and seafood.

Understanding the Science Behind the Paleo Diet

Doctors and other health experts have recently come to realize that the human body can’t efficiently process many of the most popular foods and ingredients that humans eat today. Substances such as gluten and white sugar not only impact an individual’s weight, but they also create a myriad of additional health issues. We know that those substances are directly related to a variety of metabolic problems ranging from type 2 diabetes to heart disease. The vast majority of the population will benefit from a simplified diet based on fresh foods.

Starting the Paleo Diet

The Paleo Diet is actually quite simple once you understand the basics. You shouldn’t eat any products that our ancient ancestors didn’t eat. If you are having a tough time starting the Paleo Diet, then try to break it down into manageable steps. Many people begin by slowly removing processed foods and ingredients from their kitchens and pantries. As you remove those items, you can then replace them with healthier alternatives. You might need to do some experimentation to determine which Paleo foods you enjoy cooking and eating. When you find a savory new dish or ingredient, you can then add it to your meal plan.

What to Eat and What to Avoid

Your Paleo diet should consist of fresh produce, nuts, seeds, meats, eggs, seafood, and healthy fats. One of the biggest controversies within the Paleo community is the consumption of dairy products. Some enthusiasts claim that certain forms of dairy can be quite beneficial to our gut health. Others believe that dairy is almost always processed and should be kept out of the Paleo diet. As a general rule, those who decide to eat dairy products should keep the portions to an absolute minimum. Dairy products that are high in fat and low in lactose are the best options.

Foods that are processed and packaged should be avoided entirely. Those who are on the Paleo diet also need to avoid legumes, grains, starches, and alcohol. Before eating anything, you must first read the entire ingredient list to determine how the food was made. Many foods that are classified as “healthy” actually contain hidden ingredients to mask their taste. People are often surprised to hear that some of their favorite snacks and meals contain processed sugar, high fructose corn syrup, or grains.

Sticking to the Paleo Diet isn’t an easy process, but the health benefits are staggering. The Paleo diet is a great option for anyone who is struggling with obesity, allergies, metabolic diseases, chronic fatigue, and a variety of other serious health disorders.

Paleo Apple Cranberry Sausage Stuffing Recipe

As the holiday approach, if your family eats according to the Paleo or Whole30 diet, you might be wondering how on earth you can stuff your turkey. Typically, stuffing (or dressing, as some call it) is made primarily of some kind of bread, but no grains at all are permitted on the Paleo diet. You might even be considering cheating a bit for this special family meal. Don’t! I have great news! You can make a bread-free stuffing for that turkey this year, using yummy sausage and mushrooms as your main ingredient, rather than bread.

Seasoned with delicious fruit and herbs, you won’t even miss the breaded stuffing this year!

Are you eating a Paleo or Whole30 diet this year and feel like you can't have a side dish that's not a vegetable? I have great news! • 1 (8 oz.) tub of Cremini mushrooms, diced
  • 1 large Apple, diced
  • ½ cup of fresh cranberries
  • 1 teaspoon of chopped sage

  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 2 tablespoon of olive oil
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 350F.
2. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Sauté the onion and garlic, until soft. About 3 minutes.
3. Add the sausages, without casing and cook for 6 to 7 minutes, breaking into small pieces along the way.
4. Take the skillet off the heat and add chopped mushrooms, apples, fresh cranberries and chopped up herbs — sage, rosemary and thyme — and mix well. Check and adjust the seasonings according to taste.
5. In a small bowl, crack 2 eggs and beat lightly. Add it to the skillet and mix everything well.
6. Transfer the contents of the skillet to a 9×9 or 9×13 baking dish.
7. Bake for 30 minutes.
8. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes
1. This “stuffing” can be made in advance and heated up before serving.

  • 1 teaspoon basil
  • ⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • ½ cup almond flour
For the dish
  • 1 large spaghetti squash
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil
  • 1 can diced tomatoes (20oz) or 2 cups fresh
  • 10 button mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cups broccoli, chopped
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon dried basil
Instructions
For the meatballs
  1. Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Peel and dice or grate the veggies.
  3. In a large bowl, combine all ingredients except the almond flour and mix. It should be sticky.
  4. Add the almond meal and mix until combined.
  5. Line a baking tray with tinfoil and roll the meat mixture into balls. Place them on the tray and bake for 20 minutes. Flip the meatballs and bake for another 12 minutes or until cooked through.
  6. Makes 20 meatballs
For the dish
  1. Fill a large pot with water and bring to a boil.
  2. Slice the spaghetti squash in two and remove the seeds. Place the halves into the boiling water and cook for 12-18 minutes or until tender.
  3. Remove from the water and let cool slightly before using a fork to shred into "spaghetti."
  4. Heat a large wok over medium to high heat with the coconut oil. Add the red pepper flakes and let cook for 2-3 minutes or until "popping."
  5. Reduce heat to medium and add in the broccoli, mushrooms, basil and garlic powder.
  6. Cook until almost tender. Drain the tomatoes and add them to the pan.
  7. Cover and cook over medium for 2-5 minutes until everything is cooked through.
  8. Remove the cover and let simmer until ready to serve.
  9. Portion the spaghetti squash into bowls and top with veggie mixture and meatballs.

Paleo Apple Pie Smoothie Recipe

Smoothies are life. Raise your hand if you agree!

Or maybe they are just one of the quickest and easiest ways to pack some nutrition into a breakfast of champions for those mornings when you barely had time to brush your teeth. I can go either way.

And who doesn’t love apples, right? I know you’ll love this Paleo Apple Pie Smoothie. It marries the convenience of a smoothie with the fresh, healthy appeal of apples. It’s a delightful couple. Feel free to jazz it up with collagen peptides for an extra burst of protein that won’t change the flavor at all.
